Death of a foreign national in Korea

 Procedures in Korea

1. Issuance of death-related documents

Death certificate (issued by a doctor)

Autopsy report (if necessary)

Cremation certificate (if cremation is performed)

2. Translation and notarization of documents

All documents must be translated into the relevant foreign language and notarized.

After notarization, certification by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Korea (Apostille) is required.

3. Application for repatriation of remains

Arrange international repatriation through an airline or specialized funeral service.

A consent form for body transport from the consulate in Korea is required during repatriation.

4. Report the death to the immigration office

Return the deceased's alien registration card.

Bring identification proving your relationship to the deceased.

Report the death in the deceased's home country

1. Prepare documents for the death report

Original copies of the death certificate issued in Korea, autopsy report, and cremation certificate (if applicable), along with notarized translations and Apostille certification

The deceased's foreign ID and household registration book

2. Family members must visit the relevant government office in the deceased's home country to report the death

Submit all prepared documents

Death registration can be done by a proxy.

Important notes

The death certificate with Apostille, notarized translation, and return of the foreigner registration card must not be omitted.

The original death certificate and identification documents may be required for inheritance and property issues such as deposits at financial institutions in Korea, so it is essential to organize the documents before completing the procedures in Korea.

By preparing the above procedures and documents, you can proceed with death registration and repatriation of remains in both Korea and the deceased's home country.

If you need assistance with document preparation for the deceased's death settlement or resolving inheritance and property issues such as deposits at financial institutions in Korea, please feel free to contact Ace Administrative Services Office at any time.
